There are three type of citizenship
- Citizenship by conferral
- Citizenship by birth
- Citizenship by decent
Citizenship by conferral
You must
- Be a permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen when you apply and when we decide your application
- Be in Australia when we decide on your application in most cases
- Have spent time in Australia and know about our country
- Intend to live in Australia or maintain a lasting link with Australia while overseas
- A dependent child aged 15 years or younger can be included in their parent’s application at no additional cost. The child must be a permanent resident.
- If a parent is not applying to become an Australian citizen, a child 15 years or younger can apply on their own and must pay the associated fee.
- A child aged 16 or 17 cannot be included on their parent’s application. They must apply on their own by following the process outlined on this page.
Citizenship by birth
A baby born to Australian citizen even onshore or offshore is an Australian Citizen by birth. You need to apply for Australian citizenship evidence or you can apply Australian Passport with parent’s passport showing as your citizenship evidence
A baby born in Australia and lives and stay usually in Australia for 10 year will be considered as an Australian Citizen. Baby needs to apply for citizenship Evidence.
Baby or his parents can be on any visa even temporary visa. Parents status in Australia does not affect the eligibility of baby’s citizenship.
Born outside Australia on or after 26 January 1949
You may be eligible if you were born outside Australia and one or both of your parents at the time of your birth, was also an Australian citizen.
Your parent will need to have spent at least 2 years lawfully in Australia before you apply if they became an Australian citizen:
- By descent, or
- By adoption outside Australia under the Hague Convention on Inter country Adoption or bilateral arrangement.
